Chamberlain and Chance - Big changes

THIS WEEK!
  • Chamberlain is already forgetting Dragon Quest Heroes II
  • Chance's loyalty is beyond reproach.
  • Alex sells Chance a Switch.
  • And they're doing WHAT to Mercy?!
This - they're doing this:

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes is coming to Switch in 2018.

I love that he's playing Hotline Miami, but who the heck mixed the audio for this trailer?  All the dialogue is completely drowned out!

Steamworld Dig 2 launches September 21st on Switch.

It'll be twenty bucks, and is due on PS4 and Steam "only a few days later."  This is, I think, officially the first Nintendo Switch Indie that I am seriously jealous of.

Hang on, there's gotta' be a list of currently-available Switch indies somewhere, let me fact-check that... okay there's Thumper, but that's literally it.  Steamworld Dig 2, you are in a very exclusive club.

...I guess I'd check out Wulverblade too.

Overwatch Match Highlights 10 - In These Shoes? (The Nepal McCree)

Naturally, I had to turn The Nepal McCree into his own Match Highlights vid.  The takedowns (until the last two) aren't as entertaining as what I did to The Hanamura Widow in Match Highlights 1, but the fact that we tussled, one-on-one, seven times throughout the match makes it pretty special.

Worth noting - McCree is not this player's main.  Tracer is my main, and I am thus at a significant advantage - McCree is a soft counter to Tracer at best, and if you're a real good McCree, I will fear you like few others.  As such, whenever there's a McCree on the field, he becomes a very high priority - and, naturally, the fact that he was going after me put him at the top of my list - even if he was just practicing.

You can't really hear it, in the video, but when he finally takes me down at the end, you can see him stop moving for a split-second.

That split second is what it took for him to open his dialogue wheel and select "hello!"

Yakuza Kiwami's launch trailer.

Yakuza - one of the headliners of my list of Game Franchises I Wish I Enjoyed.  Top of the list?  Arc System Works fighters.

I'm sleepy.

And there's nothing to Game Diary about - not because I haven't played anything, but because I haven't played anything you haven't already heard me talk an excessive amount about.

So here's a bunch of Sombra fan art.

Overwatch Clip Show 41 - Three Fingers.

I'm really happy with this one.  I decided to use my two favorite Mercy PotGs - the one where I don't rez, but instead get a triple-kill, and the one from last week where I used the Rez invincibility to tank a McCree ult - but elsewhere it's about Tracer play that's mostly not about getting a bunch of value out of Pulse Bomb.

This weeks songs are Comics by Caravan Palace for the Mercy bits and Three Fingers by Rivals Sons (who were featured in the Young Love clip show) for the Tracer bits.  I hope you like it!

Here it is on YouTube if you prefer (compression isn't as good as Vimeo, in my opinion).

0:26 - 0:34 : That Soldier did not see that shit comin'.  He was like "oh shit, free Mercy pick- whatthefuck, whatthefuckOH GOD."

0:34 - 0:40 : The Mercy killing this Tracer is not me.  This is a Mercy who killed me, on Tracer - I am the Tracer who dies in one smooth sweeping spray from this Mercy - and I was like "oh shits, I better give this Mercy some respect for the rest of this match."

0:41 - 1:06 : Later that same match.  Now, at first blush, this may seem like I'm literally disrespecting this Mercy as I blink past her while making Tracer say "ooh, scary!", but I'm not.  I'm actually engaging in psychological warfare to piss her off before I return to pick her.

And it works.  After the match, this Mercy sends me hate mail over PSN to let me know what a cowardly Tracer I am, to stoop to killing a Mercy, and that it was very sad - so you know Psychological Warfare just moved up in my book.

1:06 - 1:18 : The PotGs in this clip show - there are two - are uniformly less impressive than most of the other gameplay, to me.  But this was hilarious.  I watched that Junkrat lay his trap!  I'm like five yards from Sym, vulnerable as a wee lamb and she's just ignoring me.  (Wave.) "Hi!"

1:18 - 1:37 : A very effective defense push, off the back of Mei's ult.  I land a perfect clip of headshots on D.Va, pick the Zen (who very nearly kills me), put most of the required damage into Widow and then push up and do a sweet little dance with their McCree.

This is the editing I spoke about in the podcast - there's... I'm not musical, so I don't know how to describe it - but I love how I was able to match up the blink just before the McCree pick, the twist of the camera to focus on the McCree, the pick and the blink after with individual smashes on the drums.

...I like it, is all.

1:46 - 1:55 : Okay, this may just look like a wasted Pulse Bomb, but being in the trap, having just zipped past their Hanzo, I decided I might not have enough time to empty my pistols into Junkrat before the Hanzo headshots me.

The Hanzo didn't seem to have any idea where I was, for the record, but I still find the toss, wave and detonation pretty funny.

2:01 - 2:07 : This remains a gorgeous pick of That Monstrous Sombra who was so damned good I sent her a PSN message telling her so.  It's so sexy I had to include it.

2:07 - 2:21 : The team actually didn't end up making much of this incredibly effective flank by their Tracer.  The Widow pick was just being in the right place at the right time, but I was thrilled to contribute to that Hog's downfall, as he'd been nailing his hooks on me all match.  The takedown of an ulting Soldier who was looking right at me?

That shit is fucking epic.  Once again, it's timed so the beats line up with the blinks, "on the rocks" lines up with the rewind, and the big drum smash comes with the blink after the kill, not the kill itself.  I enjoy this.

2:32 - 2:39 : Hahahahahahaahahah.

2:39 - 2:51 : Including The Sombra Pick, a full four clips from Match Highlights 9 appear in this Clip Show.  This one was selected because after the Pharah pick (gorgeous!), it slows right down as I try to get a bead on the Lucio - along with the song.

2:51 - 2:58 : This is The McCree from a pretty darn good match on Nepal... that we lost.  Maybe because I was focusing on a McCree for most of round 2.  But I meet this McCree, we tussle and I kill him.  Then, I kill him again.  Then, I kill him a third and a fourth time.  In round 3, I blink past my team - and his entire team - to position myself behind him.

Only he's not McCree any more - now he's a Hanzo holding a golden bow.  PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE!  "Ooh, scary!" I say.

The rest of his team pushes forward to engage mine.  He stays behind to deal with the Tracer who was fucking with him last round.

The rewind, behind him back into the room?  Calculated.

Beautiful.

For the record, the next time we met, I killed him with a melee.  For the further record, the seventh time we tussled, he wrecked me with a single scatter arrow.  Good job, McHanzo!

'Cause you know that was like super cathartic for him lol.

2:58 - 3:09 : Again, a slower-paced clip for a slower part of the song, and another easy-going PotG - notable only because I'm proud of the restraint I showed in the second clip on the Mercy.  I start to spray - stop, adjust my aim, exhale - and finish her before she can dive in for the rez.

Nice.

3:09 - 3:38 : Another clip from Match Highlights 9, to again go with the slower part of the song.  I love that McCree and I say "hello" to each other, and he doesn't even try to kill me.  I love that The Monstrous Sombra switched to Hanzo, bumped into me and got wrecked in two smooth clips, and I love that (1) I lined up the drum smash not with a kill, but with Lucio's boop on me and (2) I dueled half their team at once and won.

3:54 - 4:03 : I would like it noted that this Widow had used her ult just before I came around the corner - she knew I was comin'.

I would also like it noted that, like the McCree in King's Row, the Soldier in Volskaya, the drum beats line up with my blink and deking of her shots.  The melee kill had to go on the final drum smash, obviously.

And then it's my Best Mercy PotG Ever.

And that's our show!

G'night everybody!

[update]

Oh no

I have terrible news.  People have been nice about my vids on NeoGAF.

The best I ever get is people telling me I've lined up the action to the music well, or that my music choices are good - but people never say nice things about the gameplay itself, or how I play Tracer, but...

First a forumer told me I'm "better than most Tracers I see on PS4" in response to Match Highlights 9.  Then someone said my Tracer is "such an annoying little troll" and "a joy to watch," which floors me, and I'm like "well if you liked that I just put up a new highlight vid," and they reply "oh I watched it hours ago - I subscribe to you on YouTube."

Which just... I was speechless.

[/update]

It's time for you to watch the latest Ruiner trailer.

You may recall, faithful reader of this blog (I really appreciate that, by the way), faithful listener of the Chamberlain & Chance podcast (now with Alex!), Chamberlain's reaction to my description of Ruiner this week, when I read the news that it will launch on PS4, Xbox and PC on September 26th.
CHAMBERLAIN: Y'know what? I haven't even heard of that.

CHANCE: Oh man - watch a trailer for that shit.

ALEX: Is that that 8-bit thing that was gorgeous?

CHANCE: No, it's like, it's like high-def top-down sci-fi Hotline Miami.

ALEX: Huh.

CHAMBERLAIN: Oh shit!

CHANCE: Yeah, watch a trailer for that.  It looks pretty fucking good.
You may then recall his reaction to footage of it, a few minutes later.
CHAMBERLAIN: Holy shit, this, this Ruiner thing is something I need like right now.   Holy c- like- awww...

CHANCE: It looks pretty fucking good, doesn't it?  Listener, go to YouTube, type in Ruiner.
Reader.  Dear, sweet, treasured reader.

Press play.

The substance looks like it could/should be pleasantly deep.  The style is something I need to check out.

The Valkyrie PTR patch has inspired a lot of new comics.

But first, someone turned my favorite part of this awesome Ana cartoon into an easy-to-embed webm, which I must share.  It features Ana accidentally Nana Boosting Mercy, and is thus relevant to our further discussion.

Now, on to the recent spate of Overwatch comics...

Huh. Squenix is remastering Secret of Mana for PS4, Vita, Steam.

Weird, right?  People have been asking for this for... fucking decades.

Launches January 15th, 2018.

Yomawari: Midnight Shadows - gameplay trailer.

Cute and creepy.

Chamberlain & Chance 86 : Not Safe For Work.

Chamberlain and Chance - Not safe for work

THIS WEEK!
  • Alex rediscovers the glory that is Hollow Knight
  • Chamberlain soothes his fury with the mediocre balm of a Musou game.
  • Chance really wishes he'd finished his thought during the porn discussion and said that he was glad he's not one of these people who got turned on their first time while looking at like, bugs or the family dog or something.  That's how you get furries!
  • And what's the biggest news out of Microsoft's Gamescom presser?
You'll have to tune in to find out!

Darkest Dungeon is now on iPad for $5!

Here's Red Hook's blog post on the subject.  If you've got an iPad and you want one of the best games of the decade on it, you'll need to have a 64-bit version with iOS 9+.

Also, may this serve as your reminder that THE CRIMSON COURT IS NOW AVAILABLE ON PS4 AND VITA.  It's ten bucks in the States and $13.50 in Canada.

Overwatch Mercy rework: Holy Shit. No way this goes live (for long).

Chris, if you're reading this, scroll down until you see the D.Va pic.

A new developer update video dropped today - not even two days after the last dev update - which is unprecedented.

I suspect the information we received today - and the PTR update - are a direct response to the fact that Seagull got a teensy bit of information about a Mercy rework out of a dev this week, which inspired a million Mercy mains to deluge the Overwatch team with demands that they not fuck up their favorite hero (see: Roadhog).

I described myself, at the news, as both excited and terrified, and on today's podcast (recorded last night) I indicated that if Blizzard fucks up Guardian Angel, I will not be pleased.

They have not fucked with Guardian Angel.  They've fucked with Resurrect, as promised. Basically, the five, the four, the three-man rezzes will never happen again, once this patch goes live.  Resurrect has been changed into a new ability (E on PC) that...

  • can only rez a single target at a time,
  • has a five yard range (drastically reduced),
  • has a thirty second cooldown,
  • no longer grants Mercy invulnerability and
  • comes with new UI features that inform Mercy which team member is which waiting corpse, so you won't accidentally rez a Widowmaker instead of your Reinhardt with Earthshatter.

Now here's the thing... I don't hate this.  It obviously removes what is currently a hero-defining ability for Mercy, but it also means a bunch of attackers can't completely out-play some defenders... only to have their work undone by a Mercy who was hiding in the wings with Rez (see: the best PotG I've ever gotten - and that was just a 2-man).

No, this means that Mercy will still be able to perform the all-important tempo rez - only now she can turn the tide with a cooldown ability that's on a (reasonable, I feel) thirty-second cooldown.  And don't for a moment knock a solo rez.  A solo rez on the right teammate at the right moment can stop a winning push in its tracks. Observe:

So Resurrect, in its current, live form, is going bye bye.  Never to be seen again.  What replaces it..?

...is so powerful it likely won't make it to live in its current form on the PTR.  I know it doesn't sound like much at first, but...

Valkyrie (New Ultimate Ability)
Valkyrie unleashes the full power of Mercy’s Valkyrie Suit, enhancing her weapons and abilities for 20 seconds:

  • Caduceus Staff: Mercy’s healing and damage boost beams now affect all allies near the targeted teammate, and the staff’s effective range has been extended
  • Caduceus Blaster: Granted infinite ammo, while simultaneously increasing damage and fire rate
  • Guardian Angel: Increased range and movement speed
  • Resurrect: Cooldown is instantly reset when Valkyrie is activated and reduced to 10s after the initial cast
  • Hover: Mercy gains the ability to fly freely, at increased movement speed
  • Regeneration (Passive): No longer interrupted when Mercy takes damage

And, again, this doesn't sound like much, but consider its actual implications.  First of all, it lets Mercy pop her rez, pop Valkyrie and immediately rez again, but more importantly...

Her healing beam and damage beam now chain to all allies close to her primary target.  This means that, with five allies grouped reasonably up, Mercy can heal 300 health per second.  For twenty seconds.  She can damage-buff five teammates at once for twenty seconds, and the Valkyrie-boosted range on the beam means she can do this from 100 feet up in the air and twenty yards back.

The range on Guardian Angel during Valkyrie seems to be like sixty yards, if not more, and she flies far faster when using it. The fact that she's constantly regenerating health throughout this entire thing is further ridiculous (see: awesome, for me at least), and what it does to her gun...

She doesn't have to reload for twenty seconds.  Her shots fire faster - she just spews them like a fireman's hose - and each shot does more damage each.  What does this mean?

This means this.

Now, bots on the target range are one thing, obviously, and this Mercy is landing all her headshots - but that remains insane.

I believe two aspects of Valkyrie will be altered before it goes live.  First of all, the duration.

Twenty seconds is an eternity in Overwatch time.  Nano Boost lasts like four seconds.  Winston's ult - which notably reduces his damage - lasts ten.  I suspect this thing will not last twenty seconds when it goes live - or if it does?  Not for long.

Second, the boost it provides Mercy's Caduceus Blaster is going to be altered.  Perhaps the speed of fire and the lack of reload will remain, but the bonus damage will go - that alone might be enough - but as-is, this looks completely fucking overpowered.  Maybe it's not in practice, but it sure looks that way, at the moment.  Nano-boosted Valkyrie-popping Mercies are already wiping teams on the PTR.

Then again, she doesn't get a genuine damage reduction during it - she's only got 200 HP - and if you can't kill the insane flying medic raining pain on your team, maybe that's your problem.  Maybe you should learn how to play Widowmaker.  Maybe I, personally, really, really hope this goes live as-is, because it sounds fun as fuck

Ooop - lookie there.
"Her gun while using Valkyrie is a bit too strong at the moment. The idea is for it to have some extra juice to be able to use it in more niche situations. Right now, it is strong enough that it is feeling like the primary way to use the ultimate, which isn't intended.

There is likely to be a good amount of tuning happening throughout this PTR cycle to iron this kind of stuff out."
-Principal Designer Geoff Goodman-
That didn't take long.

Overall, I really like these changes and I'm very hyped to try them out.  Part of the reason I prefer playing Mercy over the other healers is how versatile Mercy is.  Ana can't damage boost without her ult, Zen can only discord a single enemy at a time and Lucio's gun is, frankly, not as good as the Caduceus Blaster.

Mercy has always been able to take any situation and push it in the direction it needs to go - heal, escape, rez, gun - and Valkyrie allows her to heal her entire team at once or damage buff her entire team at once or just decisively escape or get a two-man rez when she really needs it or whip out the Blaster and go to town.  It enhances her flexibility, and I can't wait to try it out.

Elsewhere...

D.Va's changes are now live on the PTR as well.  Chris, you may love this if you think about it for a minute.

D.Va
Micro Missiles (New Ability)

  • D.Va fires a barrage of small rockets that detonate on impact, dealing damage in a limited radius around each explosion. These can be fired while D.Va is using any other ability or firing her Fusion Cannons
Chance says - the missiles alone are enough to kill a 200-hp enemy at 40+ yards (if they're kind enough to stand still and take all the shots).  Yes, the splash damage can hurt D.Va, and it's worth noting that once you press the fire button on the missiles, you can't stop mid-barrage - all fire off over the course of about 1.5 seconds, and you can naturally adjust your aim during.

Defense Matrix

  • Defense Matrix's resource meter will now deplete twice as quickly
Chance says... Translation: two seconds of uptime for the same amount of charge time.

Boosters

  • Fusion Cannons can now be fired while flying

Developer Comments: D.Va’s Defense Matrix uptime has proven to be too strong, but simply reducing it without making other changes would make her too weak (and far less interesting to play). Instead, we’re adding a new ability, and giving her the ability to fire while flying. These changes give D.Va a lot of new options while maintaining Defense Matrix’s ability to shut down big enemy attacks.

So, basically, D.Va is about to become a lot less about protecting her team and a lot more about chasing down enemies to finish them off, challenging Pharahs up in the sky and potentially picking off poorly-positioned distant foes at range with her micro missiles, while saving her Defense Matrix for enemy ults.   One wonders if Blizz will further address this change's impact on her survivability with a reduction of the notably-gigantic, center-mass crit box on her MEKA, but time will tell...

Oh and Rein will be able to turn his point of view while holding his shield in one direction yaaaaaay!
