Happy 4th Birthday PS Vita! I'd buy you a card, but they are still too expensive.— CEO Kaz Hirai (@KazHiraiCEO) February 15, 2016
Never had a Game Boy. I'd played one, a time or two as a lad, and never understood why someone would want something so far removed from the console or arcade experience. Never had a DS. Never saw a game for it that inspired my jealousy. I had a PSP, but owned less than a dozen games for it. I'd purchased it for Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Valkyria Chronicles II and Ready at Dawn's excellent God of Wars - but I didn't love it. It was good. It was okay. It wasn't as good as a full-fledged console, but it was closer than Nintendo offerings had ever been.
Then the Vita happened. Then we saw footage of Gravity Rush and Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Rayman Origins running on the thing and it was like oh my God.
So I day one'd it. And I gotta' tell you. The PlayStation Vita - the much-maligned, selling-about-as-much-as-the-Wii-U, all-but-abandoned-by-Sony PlayStation Vita - is probably my single favorite gaming platform of all time. I would sooner part with my PS4 or PS3 or PS2 than my Vita.
The thing is, a platform is only as good as its games - and this is a good moment, I think, to shine a spotlight on some of the halfway-decent titles the platform has to offer. Don't worry - won't take us too long. You've heard the Vita has no games, right?
And, well, I guess that depends on what kind of games you're looking for. What if you're a fan of the classics? What if you would love nothing more than to curl up on a couch with a handheld and enjoy stuff like...
Metal Gear Solid, Street Fighter Alpha 3, Vagrant Story, Xenogears, Tomb Raider, Silent Hill, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy Tactics, Resident Evil, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy IX, Breath of Fire IV, Valkyrie Profile and Suikoden II..?
Well, you can on your Vita. And no, it's not like every PS1 game is available as a classic off the PlayStation Network - just two hundred and sixty four of them. Similarly, if there's pretty much any PSP game you'd like to be able to play on your Vita, you can still snag those digitally off the PSN Store - or at least, I was able to get every one that I care about (the God of Wars, Valkyria Chronicles II, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, Sega Genesis Collection).
If your heart's heart belongs to the PS2, the list of available classics on Vita gets a lot shorter in the form of HD remasters - but those remasters tend to apply to some of the absolute best PS2 franchises. Or at least the ones I care about. Except Okami.
Super-sad that Okami's not on there, but that's kind of okay when you get stuff like
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy, Jak II, Jak 3, Ratchet & Clank, Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando, Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal. Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, God of War, God of War II, Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, Sly 2: Band of Thieves, Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves, Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2.
Now, full disclosure, I hear the Jak collection is actually a pretty bad port. All the others? Excellent. Excellent ports of legendary games, and for the record it it hugely valuable to me to have the Sly trilogy, the Ratchet & Clank trilogy, the Metal Gear Solid collection and the God of War collection on my Vita. I absolutely love all of those games, and I love returning to them, now and again.
But let's say - just for argument's sake - that you wouldn't pick up a Vita to PS1 classics or PS2 remasters? Well, you have some further options.
Can we talk about indies for a moment?
To buoy the Vita's lineup at launch, Sony's Shahid Ahmad, Adam Boyes and Gio Corsi began courting indies hardcore. This has paid off in a huge way, mostly in the PS4's favor - but along with the PS4, some of the best games of the past half-decade are available on your Vitas, and most of them are ten bucks or less. Let's do this... alphabetically.
Now, it would take me too long to explain what all of these are and why they're worth playing, so I'm just going to arbitrarily apply a number score to each game (to the best of my ability and based on my personal taste - and if I don't know enough about it I'll just pull the Metascore), and tell you the genre. Worth noting - I'm not going to post a screenshot for anything with less than a 7/10, except for CounterSpy because I like its moxy. Also worth noting, these aren't all the indies on Vita.
Just the ones worth caring about.
According to me.

So, y'know. There's one or two there that you might find interesting. Or fifty-two, if you have a broad palette. Now, again, these aren't all the indies on Vita - just the ones I might recommend.
Moving on! If you're not in the market for quirky indie fare but are in the market for quirky Japanese visual novels, the Vita has you covered.
Zero Escape: Virtue's Last Reward, Xblaze Code: Embryo, Steins; Gate and Xblaze: Lost Memories, along with western indie fare like Three Fourths Home. And these aren't shit games. Steins; Gate is sitting at eighty-three on Metacritic, and Virtue's Last Reward is eighty-four.
And then of course you've got otome games. These are games specifically targeted at ladies who want a nice, meaty story and some cute boys to seduce.
Amnesia: Memories, Norn9: Var Commons and Code:Realize: Guardian of Rebirth.
The Vita's got a ton of story-heavy stuff (with a ton more on the way, between Telltale and all the visual novel/otome games in the pipeline). but if you're looking for something story-heavy with a bit more, y'know, gameplay, right now at this very moment you could snag yourself
Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc - 8/10 - adventure.
Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair - 8/10 - adventure.
Grim Fandango Remastered - 8/10 - adventure.
Broken Age - 8/10 - adventure.
Telltale's The Walking Dead - 10/10 - adventure / heart blender.
Telltale's The Walking Dead: Season 2 - 8/10 - adventure.
The Wolf Among Us - 8/10 - adventure.
And you can play those on your Vita. But let's say you don't care about story - you just want some straight-up twitchy gameplay with bright flashy colors and a thumping soundtrack. Let's say you're into rhythm games.
Senran Kagura: Bon Appetit!, DJMax Technica Tune, Hatsune Miku: Project Diva F2, Superbeat Xonic, Jungle Rumble, Persona 4: Dancing All Night.
But let's say you have no rhythm and you just want to shoot shit and watch things explode and it's all awesome and pretty? ...or gory?
Dead Nation - 9/10 - shooter.
Resogun - 9/10 - shooter.
Super Stardust Delta - 8/10 - shooter.
Metal Slug 3 - 8/10 - run and gun.
Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved - 8/10 - shooter.
Gunslugs - 7/10 - platforming shooter.
Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype - 7/10 - shooter.
DariusBurst: Chronicle Saviours - 8/10 - shooter.
Sine Mora - 8/10 - shooter.
Gravity Crash Ultra - 7/10 - shooter.
If you want first-person shooters, the crop does indeed get a lot slimmer. You're basically going for very old-school,
Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton Edition - 7/10 - first-person shooter.
Oddworld: Strander's Wrath HD - 8/10 - first-person shooter.
or you're looking at the (actually pretty solid!) Vita port of Borderlands 2,
Borderlands 2 - 8/10 - first person shooter.
or the alpha and omega of Vita FPSs, Killzone Mercenary. It's a seriously phenomenal game, it plays perfectly, and I am not kidding or blithering hyperbole when I say it really does look this good:
Killzone Mercenary - 9/10 - first person shooter.
Doesn't that blow your mind? On a handheld. What's possible on the Vita is insane, but few studios actually do anything with it. What blows my mind is that we haven't seen ports of last-gen standouts like BioShock, Doom 3 or, say, Bulletstorm. That'd be amazing.
Anyway, let's move on. Let's say you're into fighting games? Well, you have some options.
BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma - 8/10 - fighting.
Mortal Kombat - 9/10 - fighting.
Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus R - 7/10 - fighting.
Dead or Alive 5 Plus - 8/10 - fighting.
Arcana Heart 3: Love Max!!!!! - 7/10 - fighting.
J-Stars Victory VS Plus - 8/10 - fighting.
BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma Extend - 8/10 - fighting.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale - 7/10 - brawler.
Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax - 8/10 - fighting.
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z - 7/10 - fighting.
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend - 8/10 - fighting.
Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition - 7/10 - fighting.
Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 - 8/10 - fighting.
Street Fighter X Tekken - 8/10 - fighting.
Or let's say you want something simple, like those LEGO games? Kayla loves 'em, and for some reason all the LEGO games are on Vita. Or at least all the ones that came out since 2012.
But - and maybe this is just me - I didn't buy my Vita for LEGO games. That's just kind of a happy accident. Anyone who had an eye on the Vita's predecessor - the PlayStation Portable, which actually got some solid first-party support from Sony towards the end of its life cycle - knows that if there's one thing Sony's handhelds do well, it's RPGs.
Specifically JRPGs. There are so many JRPGs on the Vita that you can separate them into heaping piles for each sub-genre, but let's skip that step because this thing is already pretty long and complicated.
Atelier Totori Plus: The Adventurer of Arland - 8/10 - role-playing.
Demon Gaze - 7/10 - dungeon-crawler.
Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 - 7/10 - role playing.
Ragnarok Odyssey - 7/10 - action-RPG.
Sorcery Saga: Curse of the Great Curry God - 7/10 - Roguelike.
Atelier Ayesha Plus: The Alchemist of Dusk - 8/10 - role playing.
Pocket RPG - 7/10 - action-RPG.
Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment - 7/10 - action-RPG.
Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention - 8/10 - tactical RPG.
Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2: Sisters Generation - 7/10 - role playing.
Operation Abyss: New Tokyo Legacy - 7/10 - dungeon crawler.
Tales of Hearts R - 8/10 - role playing.
Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart - 7/10 - tactical RPG.
Atlier Meruru Plus: The Apprentice of Arland - 7/10 - role playing.
Lost Dimension - 8/10 - tactical RPG.
Dungeon Travelers 2: The Royal Library & The Monster Seal - 7/10 - dungeon crawler.
Soul Sacrifice - 8/10 - action-RPG.
Atelier Rorona Plus: The Alchemist of Arland - 8/10 - role playing.
New Little King's Story - 7/10 - action-RPG.
Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 3: V Generation - 7/10 - role playing.
Rainbow Moon - 7/10 - tactical RPG.
Soul Sacrifice Delta - 8/10 - action-RPG.
Natural Doctrine - 7/10 - tactical RPG.
Freedom Wars - 9/10 - action-RPG.
Oreshika: Tainted Bloodlines - 8/10 - role playing.
Sword Art Online: Lost Song - 7/10 - action-RPG.
Ys: Memories of Celceta - 7/10 - action-RPG.
Ragnarok Odyssey ACE - 7/10 - action-RPG.
Atelier Escha & Logy Plus: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky - 8/10 - role playing.
Ar nosurge Plus: Ode to an Unborn Star - 8/10 - role playing.
Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited - 8/10 - tactical RPG.
Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - 8/10 - role playing.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel - 9/10 - role playing.
Persona 4 Golden - 10/10 - role playing.
So the thing's got an RPG or two on it. Oh also western ones like
Citizens of Earth - 7/10 - action-RPG.
Child of Light- 7/10 - open-world RPG / long-form poetry jam.
The Vita is a petite powerhouse for Japan's staple genres, because western developers have all-but-abandoned the platform for reasons I cannot comprehend. Ubisoft, of all people, continue to release nice little noshes on it. The Assassins Creed Chronicles stealth-platformers are due this spring, and Take-Two are actually bringing Civilization Revolution 2 Plus to the table (and rumor has it XCOM: Enemy Within is on the way as well).
I am, primarily, an action gamer. Give me a good platformer and I'm in love, give me a solid combat system in a brawler and I'm in heaven, and combine the two (coughcough Guacamelee coughcough) and I'll never shut up about you. So let's look at platformers. The list is short, but it's solid.
Assassin's Creed III: Liberation- 7/10 - open-world action-adventure.
Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time - 7/10 - action-platformer.
Rayman Legends - 7/10 - pure platformer.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss - 9/10 - third-person shooter/platformer.
Also, the above is not a bullshot. That's a direct-feed capture from my very own Vita.
Isn't it beyooteeful?
Jet Set Radio - 7/10 - open-world platformer.
LittleBigPlanet Via - 9/10 - platformer/LEGO set.
Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD - 7/10 - open-world adventure/platformer.
Sound Shapes - 8/10 - rhythm platformer.
Rayman Origins - 9/10 - pure platformer.
Tearaway - 9/10 - adventure platformer.
Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty! - 8/10 - adventure platformer.
Gravity Rush - 9.5/10 - open-world flying action-platformer.
If you just want to beat the crap out of enemies, things open up again and you've got a ton of options. Let's start off with the single best game on any platform to release in 2013.
Dragon's Crown - 10/10 - old-school 2D brawler.
Game of the Year 2013.
Once again, not best handheld or best Vita game.
Best game. Period. Dragon's Crown. Dig it.
Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed - 8/10 - open-world adventure brawler.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus - 8/10 - brawler.
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 - 7/10 - brawler.
Malicious: Rebirth - 7/10 - brawler.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus - 7/10 - brawler.
Muramasa Rebirth - 10/10 - brawler Metroidvania.
Toukiden: The Age of Demons - 7/10 - it's like Monster Hunter but better-looking.
Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed - 7/10 - brawler.
Samurai Warriors 4 - 8/10 - musou.
Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus - 8/10 - superfun titty-brawler.
Samurai Warriors 4-II - 7/10 - musou.
Phantom Breaker Battle Grounds - 7/10 - 2D brawler.
One Piece: Unlimited World Red - 7/10 - open-world adventure brawler.
Toukiden: Kiwami - 8/10 - like Monster Hunter but pretty.
Muramasa Rebirth: Genroku Legends - 10/10 - brawler Metroidvania.
That is Fishy Tales of the Nekomata, A Cause to Daikon For,
A Spirited Seven Nights' Haunting and Hell's Where The Heart Is -
DLC for Muramasa Rebirth.
And if you're not interested in indies or rhythm games or otome games or visual novels or first-person shooters or fighting games or LEGO games or RPGs or platformers or brawlers, well, there's other stuff too, in case you're still thinking the Vita is no-good trash.
Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls - 7/10 - psychotic adventure/shooter/sometimes-brawler.
WipEout 2048 - 9/10 - racing.
Plants Vs. Zombies - 8/10 - tower defense.
Touch My Katamari - 7/10 - surreal roll-a-thon.
Deception IV: Blood Ties - 7/10 - brutal trap and humiliation engine.
Pixeljunk Monsters Ultimate HD - 8/10 - tower defense.
Resident Evil Revelations 2 - 7/10 - survival horror.
Lumines: Electronic Symphony- 8/10 - match/puzzle.
MLB 15: The Show - 8/10 - sports.
Quell Memento - 8/10 - zen puzzler.
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational - 7/10 - sports.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted - 8/10 - racing.
FIFA Soccer - 8/10 - sports.
Motorstorm RC- 8/10 - racing.
Sonic All-Stars Racing Transformed - 8/10 - kart racing.
Annnd... that's about it!
Those are all the Vita games (that I can think of) that you might wanna' check out, if you choose to pick up this wonderful, plucky little handheld. If you want my personal faves, definitely go with Don't Starve: Giant Edition, Killzone Mercenary, Dragon's Crown, Muramasa Rebirth, The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, Persona 4 Golden, Guacamelee, WipEout 2048, Senran Kagura: Shinovi Versus (warning: boobs), Akiba`s Trip, Undead & Undressed, Gravity Rush, Tearaway, Rayman Origins, Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Freedom Wars, Dead Nation, Resogun, Telltale`s The Walking Dead, Broken Age, Velocity 2X, The Swindle, Steamworld Dig, Shovel Knight, Rogue Legacy, Nuclear Throne, Olli Olli 2, Limbo, Bastion, Hotline Miami, Dustforce and Crypt of the NecroDancer. And that should get you started.
Now, of course, you are no doubt aware that Sony has lately begun referring to the Vita as a "legacy platform." Meaning they ain't too interested in supporting it any more. So there's no more games to look forward to on the thing!
Well, mostly. No games except for...

So yeah. Vita. It means life.
And the next time someone tries to tell you it has no games, maybe give them this link.
